The annual Met Gala is widely considered fashion’s most anticipated event of the year. The who’s who of fashion, entertainment, and art gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute to celebrate the opening of the institute’s annual fashion exhibit. This year’s exhibit honored the work of Charles James, America’s first couturier.
James is known for his structured gowns and use of lavish fabrics. He played up a woman’s figure. Instead of concealing a woman’s curves he showed it off. James was also pretty innovative. In 1929 he created the “Taxi Dress.” The wraparound frock was so easy to wear, it could be slipped on in the backseat of a taxi.
James was also the inspiration behind Zac Posen’s Fall 2014 Collection. Some of Posen’s work made its way down the red carpet of Monday night’s Met Gala, but his gowns weren’t the only stand out style moment of the night. Check out our favorites .
Fashion’s newest “It Girl” Lupita Nyong’o turned heads in an attention grabbing Prada dress. The green netted number was decorated with elaborate embellishments and feathers .
The Oscar winner continued the over top look and added an emerald green crystal embellished headpiece. Lupita finished her look with purple eye shadow and an auburn colored haircut.
Initially, I wasn’t sold on Lupita’s look, but throughout the night I began to love it. It actually became one of my favorite looks of the night. No, it wasn’t the glamorous ball gown we’re used to seeing her in, but it’s about time she took a MAJOR fashion risk!
Sweeties, what do you think?
The Carter’s also knocked it out the park. The couple looked like red carpet royalty dressed in Givenchy. Jay Z was dapper in his white and black tux, while Beyonce slayed in a black sheer and beaded gown. The black number featured a plunging neckline, a front slit on the skirt , and a peplum top.
Bey’s beaded veil and vampie lip finished her look. GORG!
Rihanna slayed in a white hot Stella McCartney look. The “Monster ” singer wore a figure-flattering skirt that featured a side ruching, detail. The skirt was teamed with a long sleeve crop top.
The crop top also featured a mock neck an open back, while her skirt had a dramatic train.
Rih pulled her hair up into a curly ponytail and added a crystal choker and a pink lip. Perfection!
Solange always gets it right and Monday night was no different. She played with color all while rocking a new pixie cut. Yes, for all the risk takers of the night. Her 3.1 Phillip Lim dress was adorable. The bubble hemline was both fun and adorable. Solo teamed her dress with gold ankle strap sandals.
What do you think of Solo’s chic cut? Sweet or Sour?
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West kept it simple in Lanvin. Kim’s blue strapless gown was trimmed in black along with a front slit. Kanye kept it classic in a wing tip tux.
Rita Ora was anything but simple in her Donna Karan Atelier tulle strapless gown. The gown’s front slit shows off her killer lace up heels. Rita’s signature red lip finished her look.
The Met Gala’s host, Anna Wintour wore a chic and colorful Chanel gown. Of course she was on trend in her pastels.
Co-host Sarah Jessica Parker wore a gorgeous black and white Oscar de la Renta ball gown.
The black bodice was attached to a voluminous skirt with a checkered print train.
Gabrielle Union was among the attendees that sported Prada. This is probably the most risque look I’ve ever seen her in. I love the feathered and crystal embellished skirt and crop top combination. A braided up do finished her look.
Blake Lively never fails when she goes with Gucci. The rose pink gown was decorated with sequined embellishments along with dramatic train, making it perfect for the Met. Ruby colored jewels and sultry waves finished her look.
I was bit torn when it came to adding Taylor Swift to my best dressed list, but I fell in love with the detailing on her custom Oscar de la Renta gown. She finished her look with her signature red lip and old Hollywood glamour waves.
Nicole Richie never ceases to amaze me. For the met the House of Harlow designer got edgy in a Donna Karan Atelier velvet gown. The backless number was simple, but I was still captivated. Maybe it was her lilac colored hair that I’m in awe with. Either way she nailed it and earned a spot on my best dressed list.
The gala was all about hot couples and making a sexy appearance last night was super model Gisele Bundchen and her husband Tom Brady. Gisele’s black lace gown, was simple yet sultry.
Victoria and David Beckham made it an all white type of night. Victoria wore a strapless dress, while her sexy husband wore a white tux. My gawd can he get any hotter?
Chanel Iman and her beau A$AP Rockey sported custom Topshop for the evening. These two were super giddy all night . I wonder what he was whispering in her ear? Cute!
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend also got it right in Ralph Lauren. I loved Chrissy’s grey sequined gown. The ruffle neck brought the kind of drama expected for the Met. It wasn’t too over the top that it distracted from her beauty.
Janelle Monae ditched her signature black and white suit for a red and black Tadashi Shoj cape . Ladies this is how you make a statement. Her signature pompadour was still in place , but she added a long braid for effect.
Dita von Teese sizzled in a nude and red Zac Posen gown .
Kendall Jenner joined a host of beauties who sported Topshop to the Met. The soft pink gown featured a cinched bodice and trumpet style hemline. She complimented the strapless number with a Chopard necklace. Kendall went with soft makeup, but went with dramatic hair. She gets 10′s across the board.
Speaking of bringing the drama, did you see Karolina Kurkova in her two tier Marchesa gown? Why did she slay the red carpet like this? She shut it all the way down. As if the asymmetric neckline and floral print weren’t enough , the designer added 3d floral applique to the gown. It’s levels to this type of hotness. A Harry Winston necklace and sleek bun finished her look.
Karolina Kurkova, Beyonce , and Kendall Jenner topped my best dressed list. Who made your list?
